Ask anyone outside Monroe County about flooding in the Keys and they will say hurricane. Ask anyone who lives on Stillwright Point and they will tell you about a sunny afternoon in October when the street filled up and stayed that way until Thanksgiving.
In 2019 that neighborhood in Key Largo flooded for 94 days straight. No storm. No forecast cone. Just a king tide that pushed water up through the ground and the storm drains and left it there for three months.
Twin Lakes, a few miles away, has dealt with the same thing. Monroe County is now spending roughly $21 million elevating roads and putting in a pump-and-treat drainage system across Shaw Drive, Crane Street and Adams Drive, designed against 2040 sea level rise projections.
That is the county fixing the street. It does not do anything for the six inches of water sitting against your front door. That part is yours, and that is what a barrier is for.
One king tide. Three months of water.
That is how long Stillwright Point in Key Largo stayed flooded in 2019, per WLRN. Roads under one to two feet of water, and not a named storm anywhere near Florida.
And then there is the other kind.
Hurricane Irma came ashore at Cudjoe Key on September 10, 2017 as a Category 4. Monroe County reports more than 4,000 homes destroyed or badly damaged, most of it between Cudjoe Key and Marathon, with surge up to about nine feet in places.
Nothing about this island chain is average.

The water comes from below
The Keys sit on porous limestone. A king tide does not need to run over a seawall to reach your street, it comes up through the rock and out of the storm drains. You cannot berm your way out of that.
Duration, not just depth
Six inches for three months does more damage than two feet for one night. Sandbags rot, plywood swells, and anything temporary fails on a timeline measured in weeks.
No two lots sit the same
Elevation changes by the foot down here, and the housing stock runs from 1950s ground-level conch houses to modern stilt builds. A kit sized for a generic doorway fits almost nothing.
Getting anything here takes time
One road in and one road out. Materials, crews and contractors all arrive on US 1. Anything you plan to do in the week before a storm, you are doing behind everyone else on the highway.
Every way the water gets in, closed.

Do barriers work against king tide flooding?
Yes, and that is the flooding the Keys see most. King tide water arrives slowly and stays. A sealed panel holds against standing water for as long as it is standing, which is exactly what a three-month flood asks for.
How long can tidal flooding actually last?
Longer than people expect. Stillwright Point in Key Largo was under water for 94 days straight in 2019. One to two feet on residential streets, no hurricane involved.
Do you install in the Keys?
Yes, Key Largo down through Key West. Panels are measured, built and installed by our own crew out of our Florida factory. No dealer network and no subcontractors.
How much does it cost?

What about water coming up the drains?
Barriers seal openings above ground and do nothing about a sewer line that pressurizes underneath. That takes backflow prevention, and the assessment covers both.
Can I install them myself?
Deploying them, yes. The panels are light enough for one person and most homes go up in about an hour. The channels get mounted once by our crew so the seal actually seals.
