On April 12, 2023, Fort Lauderdale took 25.91 inches of rain in a single day. The airport shut down for nearly two days and more than a thousand flights were cancelled. There was no hurricane. There was not even a named storm.
Fourteen months later, in June 2024, it happened again. Over 20 inches fell on Fort Lauderdale and more than 22 inches on northeast Miami-Dade in a few days, and the National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for the region. Add the king tides that put salt water against thresholds in Miami Beach, Hollywood, and the Keys every fall, and the pattern is clear.

It is not only hurricanes
Fort Lauderdale’s 2023 flood came from a stalled storm, not a named one. The June 2024 flooding put a flash flood emergency over Miami-Dade and Broward. Neither one gave anybody a week of warning.
