HOMOSASSA FLOOD BARRIERS FOR WATERFRONT AND RIVER CORRIDOR HOMES. CUSTOM FABRICATED. LOCALLY INSTALLED.
Homosassa sits along one of Florida’s most surge-exposed Nature Coast corridors. When Helene hit in 2024, storm surge traveled miles up the Homosassa River and its tributaries, flooding homes that had never seen water before. Dam It Defense flood barriers are custom-measured, engineered, and installed by our local team.

Not all flood barriers are built the same. Our aluminum flood barrier systems use aerospace-grade aluminum cross sections, reinforced channel depth, and dual-phase EPDM compression gaskets engineered to a higher standard than most competing flood protection systems on the market in Citrus County and the Nature Coast.
What makes Homosassa one of Florida’s most surge-exposed Nature Coast corridors.
The Homosassa River connects directly to the Gulf of Mexico, creating an open channel for storm surge to travel miles inland during major weather events. Citrus County’s low-lying coastal topography and the river’s wide, shallow estuary amplify surge height well beyond what most homeowners expect. During Hurricane Helene in 2024, surge reached up to 10 feet in parts of Citrus County, traveling miles up Halls River Road and flooding homes that had never taken on water in decades of ownership. Old Homosassa, the Riverhaven community, and properties west of US-19 bore the worst of it. Homosassa is primarily designated FEMA Zone AE, a high-risk Special Flood Hazard Area where flood insurance is required for most mortgaged properties.
Direct Gulf and river exposure
The Homosassa River flows directly into the Gulf of Mexico with minimal elevation change, creating an unobstructed surge channel. During Helene, floodwaters traveled miles inland up Halls River Road and surrounding tributaries, reaching homes more than a mile from the river itself.
Repeat storm history
Homosassa and Citrus County have experienced significant surge flooding from multiple storms in recent years including Hurricane Hermine (2016), Hurricane Idalia (2023), Tropical Storm Debby (2024), and Hurricane Helene (2024), which produced up to 10 feet of surge in coastal areas. This is not a once-in-a-generation risk.
Homes that have never flooded before
One of the most jarring aspects of Helene’s impact on Homosassa was how many long-time residents experienced flooding for the first time. Properties well inland from the river, at seemingly safe elevations, took on water as surge overwhelmed the river and drainage system simultaneously.
FEMA Zone AE designation
Much of coastal Homosassa is designated FEMA Zone AE, a high-risk Special Flood Hazard Area where flood insurance is required for most mortgaged properties. Even homes outside the mandatory zone face meaningful surge risk given Citrus County’s open Gulf exposure and flat coastal terrain.

Common Homosassa flood barrier questions.
Is Homosassa in a FEMA flood zone?
Yes. Much of coastal Homosassa, particularly west of US-19 and along the Homosassa River corridor, is designated FEMA Zone AE, a high-risk Special Flood Hazard Area where flood insurance is required for most mortgaged properties. The river’s direct connection to the Gulf creates severe surge risk during major storm events.
How much do flood barriers cost for a Homosassa home?
Flood barrier systems are custom-assessed based on your opening count, dimensions, height requirements, and threshold conditions. Your free on-site assessment includes measurements and a scoped quote for your specific property. No generic estimates. Every system is fabricated to your exact openings at our St. Petersburg facility.
How bad was the flooding in Homosassa during Helene?
Hurricane Helene produced up to 10 feet of storm surge in parts of Citrus County in September 2024. Floodwaters traveled miles up Halls River Road and surrounding tributaries. Homes in the Riverhaven community and throughout Old Homosassa that had never flooded before took on significant water. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office rescued over 100 residents.
Do flood barriers work for river and estuary properties?
Yes. Our systems are engineered for both tidal intrusion and storm surge conditions. Industrial-grade aluminum and dual-phase EPDM compression gaskets create a watertight seal at ground-level openings including garages, sliders, doors, and entry points regardless of whether the water source is river surge, Gulf storm surge, or stormwater backup.
How quickly can flood barriers be installed before hurricane season?
Hurricane season begins June 1. Assessment, fabrication, and installation timelines depend on opening count and current scheduling. The best window is now before storm season demand peaks. Schedule your free assessment to get a realistic installation timeline for your Homosassa property.
Do you serve Crystal River and other Citrus County communities?
Yes. Dam It Defense serves all of Citrus County including Crystal River, Old Homosassa, Ozello, Hernando Beach, and surrounding Nature Coast communities. Our in-house team handles assessment, fabrication, and installation across the entire region.
